Personal Protective Equipment
- Wear either a full-length rubberized apron or chemical and fire-resistant laboratory coat when working with laboratory materials.
- Wear safety glasses whenever working in the laboratory.
- When pouring, mixing or reacting significant volumes (usually greater than 10ml) of hazardous chemicals, goggles or a face shield must be worn in addition to gloves and a lab coat. A face shield provides maximum protection when it is large enough to protect the chin, neck, and ears, as well as the face.
- When working with hazardous liquids, gloves made of material known to be resistant to permeation by the chemical must be worn. Prior to wearing gloves, by air inflation for the absence of pinhole leaks.
- Always wear low-heeled shoes with fully covering "uppers"; do not wear shoes
with open toes.
- Whenever exposure by inhalation may exceed the threshold limits described in the MSDS (or other references available at EH&S), use the chemical(s) in a fume hood; if this is not possible, a proper respirator must be worn.
Note: Respirator use must be approved by EH&S.
- Carefully inspect all protective equipment before using. Do not use defective equipment.
