Application to the Ph.D. Program in Pharmacology

All applications for admission are reviewed individually, and admission to the program is on a competitive basis. It is anticipated that the successful applicant will have completed a bachelor's degree in a physical or life science with a B average, or better.  Also, applicants should demonstrate a commitment to a career in research through an undergraduate or post-baccalaureate research experience.

Support for Ph.D. Students:  The Pharmacology Program provides competitive stipend support, required fees, and health insurance benefits for all qualified students. Full tuition is also paid by the program. For the 2008-2009 academic year, the stipend is $25,500.

To apply for the Ph.D. program, please click these links and submit the following:

Please also submit the following supporting documents for your application:

  • Official Academic Transcript(s)
  • Recommendations (3) will be submitted electronically
  • GRE general test only (Georgetown code: 5244)
  • TOEFL (foreign student applicants only)

All supporting documents should be addressed to:

Office of Biomedical Graduate Education
Attn: Credentials - Ph.D. Pharmacology
Box 571411-P
3900 Reservoir Road, N.W.
NE303 Medical-Dental Building
Washington, DC  20057-1411

Students interested in the CONACYT Fellowships should apply to both Georgetown and CONACYT concurrently.

Because the Pharmacology program attempts to complete the selection process by the end of March, applications should be complete before January 15 to ensure full consideration. Early consideration will be given to applications completed by January 1; individuals completing applications by this deadline have a competitive advantage. Late applications are considered only if there is a space left in the class.  Students are selected on the basis of academic records, recommendations, GRE scores and interviews with the faculty members of the program. A completed application includes all of the credentials noted above.  Note that it usually takes several (>4) weeks between the time you request a transcript and its receipt by us.  Especially if you do this over Christmas vacation when mail is slow, everyone is on vacation, and all other applicants are also applying (meaning the office receives thousands of pieces of mail which take time to sort and get to us).  Please plan accordingly (i.e. tip:  Apply before Christmas vacation).   A significant tip is to send another official transcript to Dr. Gerard Ahern (address below) to speed up review of your application.  Receipt of your transcript is the ONE thing that slows down the review process!

If you have any questions regarding these procedures, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Gerard Ahern, the Program Director for the Ph.D. Program at gpa3@georgetown.edu or Mr. W. Taylor Johnson, M.F.A., Director, Graduate Biomedical Education, at (202) 687-1379 or via email at johnsonw@georgetown.edu
