The photographer's invisibility can be construed as a metaphor of his safety. He is not ‘in the picture' of this world beset by poverty, starvation. The camera, also invisible, can be interpreted metaphorically as an instrument of the Western world's technological apparatus that guarantees the photographer's safety, yet does nothing for the child.
