The textbook for this course is Dwight H. Perkins et al, Economics of Development, Fifth Edition, (New York: W.W. Norton & Co., 2001). There is also my latest book, Economic Systems in Historical Perspective, (Kendall/Hunt, 1997), from which a few selections will be used as well. My office hours will be TuTh 10-11:45, but as long as the door is open, feel free to drop in at  569 ICC.

The student is expected to write a 15-20 page term paper on a mutually agreeable topic. It is hoped that the paper will be quantitatively oriented and use the professional literature in economic development. Usually two kinds of paper are selected: (1) a country study, focusing on macroeconomic development planning issues; (2) an issue in development economics, which involves a survey of the relevant literature and does not necessarily involve a country. There will be a mid-term (about 30% of your grade) and a final exam (40%). The paper (also 30%) is due on November 14 - papers handed in after 5:00 pm on that day will be graded with a one-letter grade penalty. (A brief statement on your topic and a preliminary bibliography are due by Oct. 15.)
