The Georgetown Law Center, in conjunction with the Linguistics Department, has established a new program--English for Lawyers. The program is designed to provide language support for international lawyers who are studying in special programs at the Law Center. The program is supervised by Dr. Andrea Tyler and taught by linguistics graduate students.
The English for Lawyers program is part of the Law Centerfs ongoing initiative to expand the international lawyers program, which has grown from 40 to 180 international lawyers in the past four years and promises to continue to expand. In coming years, the Law Center envisions establishing a multi-section, multi-course program in English for Lawyers. This represents a tremendous opportunity for graduate students in linguistics who have interest in second language writing, cross-cultural spoken interaction, discourse analysis, and language of the law. Participating in the program will provide both immediate financial benefits as well as unique training in this specialized, rapidly growing area. At this point, Georgetown is the only Department of Linguistics in the country participating in such a joint program.
The teaching positions have already been filled for this semester. But positions may be opening up next semester. Anyone interested in participating in the program in future years is encouraged to contact Andrea Tyler at tyleran@georgetown.edu. To be eligible to teach in the program, students are strongly encouraged to take LING 454 Discourse Analysis for Language Teachers, LING 456 Second Language Writing, and/or LING 752 Seminar: Professional Spoken Discourse. LING 752 is being offered this spring.
