History of Portuguese Language

MW 2:40-3:55 ICC 207A

 This diachronic study course presents the evolution of the Portuguese language from Latin
and it is divided into three parts:
 I. Classical and Vulgar Latim - presentation of the distinction between them, the
importance of  both to the Romance languages development.
 II. External History of the Portuguese language - historical events related to the
development of the language in the different stages.
 III. Internal History of the Portuguese language - the evolution and changes that
happened from Latin to Portuguese:
  1. Lexical
  2. Phonological
  3. Morphological
  4. Syntactical
 The students will have the opportunity to do exercises in developing the evolution of
words and in studying old texts.  There will be oral presentations by the students and discussion of
controversial points as well as short written papers.
 There will be one midterm, one final exam, and a term paper.
 No text book is used.  The students have to read required books and articles taken from
the bibliography given.  Some items are designated by the teacher others are chosen by the
students.
