Text: Chemistry: The Central Science, by Brown, Lemay and Bursten, 9th edition, Prentice Hall, 2003, ISBN 0-13-066997-0
Recommended Text: Solutions to Exercises, by Wilson, 9th edition, Prentice Hall, 2003, ISBN 0-13-009798-5 (This will also be on reserve in the Blommer Library, 3rd floor Reiss)

From medicine to physics, every scientific field has at its core some of the concepts that we will cover in this course and in Chemistry 002, which most of you will take in the spring. We will begin with the basic “grammar” of chemistry, the atom, and subatomic particles. We will then move on to interactions between atoms to form molecules and ionic compounds, and then to interactions and reactions between molecules, ionic compounds and/or atoms. Next, we will look at the energy changes during reactions and begin thinking about why some reactions take place while others do not. We will end the semester with a discussion of the rates at which reactions take place. Throughout the semester we will look at how all of these show up in everyday life.

Grading: You will have three in-class exams. These will count for two-thirds of your grade in the course. Your final exam will count the remaining third. There will be no makeup exams, so if you miss an exam, your other exams will count more toward your final.

Your final grades will be assigned based on the following guidelines. (You are guaranteed to receive at least the grade corresponding to your percentage grade.)

Percentage Letter grade
94-100 A                                                  76-79 C+
90-93 A–                                                  73-75 C
86-89 B+                                                  70-73 C-
83-85 B                                                    60-69 D
80-83 B-                                                  <60 F

Honor code: Entering students are required by the College to complete the on-line tutorial on academic honesty. Violation of the principles set forth in the tutorial are grounds for failure in the course. Cheating, in any form, will not be tolerated.

Suggested Problems: You will not be required to turn in the suggested problems for each chapter. However, it makes sense that if I have suggested a problem, it probably illustrates a concept that I feel is important for you to remember. The answers to these can be found in the Solutions Manual for the text. This is available on an optional basis in the student bookstore and will also be on reserve in the Blommer Science Library on the third floor of Reiss.
