One of the two paintings at the
Whitney Biennial, Empirical Construction: Istanbul, is one
of her largest to date: a 10-by-15-foot tour de force that blends
fragmentary views of Istanbul’s Old City with geometric forms. It’s
also, says Mehretu—who’s lived in Addis Ababa, Dakar, and Kalamazoo—“the
only painting I’ve made so far based on one particular city.”
