Bringing butterflies into the classroom

Liz Egitto with butterfly training set-up
Painted ladies (Vanessa cardui) and Cabbage white (Pieris rapae) butterflies have been used in the classroom for studies of the butterfly lifecycle. We are working on the development of curricula for high school and first-year non-major biology students that demonstrate the learning capacities of butterflies. These experiments allow students to generate and test hypotheses, utilize statistical techniques, and investigate plant-insect interactions and their evolutionary implications.

Fun with caterpillars! Larvae go to school too.
